Pattern tiles vs shaped tiles
25 September 2017
Tiles are becoming increasingly popular. Whereas in earlier years they were mainly seen as functional – think of a 1930s hallway or white tiles in the kitchen – they are now an essential element of your interior. It is not only the kitchen, hallway or bathroom that can be decorated; what about behind or beneath the fireplace, your worktop or simply your wall? Do you dare to take on the challenge of putting them wherever you like? And then there is that enormous choice... Which tile will you choose?
Pattern tiles
We also call pattern tiles Portuguese cement tiles. These days, you can even find them at DIY stores! And yes, they are usually cheaper there. But beware: 99% of the time, these are not genuine cement tiles. The quality is poor and the patterns are dull. Portuguese cement tiles are made by hand, one by one. They are genuinely handmade products, made with care. That cannot be cheap. Once laid, these cement tiles also require care and attention. They need to be properly impregnated, and you may only clean them with specific products. A truly unique addition to your home!
These tiles are particularly known for their colourful appearance and variety of patterns. Some tiles consist of a single pattern, while others need to be laid together to reveal the larger design. At Designtegels.nl, we have more than 1,000 varieties, in a range of colours and shapes. You can therefore be as bold as you like. Will you choose a calm pattern in a soothing colour? Or a patchwork of different patterns and colours? Both are sold in large quantities!
Shaped tiles
Shaped tiles? Well, I am not sure whether that is the correct name, but what else would you call them? Tiles made up of different shapes. Hexagons, rectangles, Laterna, herringbone, fish scales. These days, anything is possible! These shaped tiles are (usually) not cement tiles but fired tiles, originating from Morocco or Spain. But do not be mistaken: these tiles are also made by hand, one by one. Thanks to their different finish, these tiles are easier to maintain. As they are fired and glazed, they do not need to be impregnated and can be cleaned with whatever you like. Their glaze also gives them a completely different appearance, usually with a glossy finish.
This collection of tiles also offers an enormous variety of colours. We have one shade of blue in 6 different tones, so choosing can be difficult! As this is a hand-finished product, the colour will always vary slightly from tile to tile, giving the overall look a playful character.

Made your choice?
Have I made the choice a little easier? Then I have another fun twist: a combination of both tiles! The hexagonal cement tile. Designtegels.nl designed and produced this tile itself, and it is only available from us. How much more unique could you want it to be? And we love exciting patterns, so this shape is given extra emphasis by the graphic print on the tile, creating a wonderfully striking effect when laid in your hallway or kitchen.
